Across the global South, massive swathes of land are being designated as ‘protected areas’, reimagined into national parks or nature reserves in the name of conservation, protecting biodiversity as well as ‘saving the planet’ by offsetting carbon emissions. The so-called ‘30x30’ initiative aims to almost double the number of ‘protected areas’ to 30% of terrestrial cover by 2030.
