From the junior leagues to the Olympic games, our warming climate is being felt across the world of sport. Yet, the impacts of extreme temperatures, air pollution, and “natural” disasters are not equally shared among athletes.
Sport is a great equaliser, and can drive racial, cultural and social cohesion. And participation in group physical activities improves the well-being and opportunities of youth, especially those in low-income neighbourhoods and communities of colour. However, the climate crisis will have the greatest impact on underprivileged youths’ ability to take part and progress in an athletic career.
